In a poignant scene from the movie 'The Pursuit of Happiness', actor Will Smith observes his son practise basketball. He then tells him not to spend too much time on the sport since he'll probably only be average at it. Smith's reasoning is that since he himself had been average at it, it's obvious his son would be the same. Dejected and disappointed, the little boy packs away the ball into a plastic bag. And then Smith gives his famous speech where he tells his son to always 'protect your dreams' and to never give up on something just because someone else tells you to. He goes on to say that when some people can't manage to achieve something themselves, they don't want anyone else to achieve it either.
Whenever i watch that scene, something tugs at my heart. My friends, as 2020 approaches, I'm sure many of you are re-assessing your life goals. Maybe you have some wonderful plans for the New Year. Some of you might be considering starting your own business, or taking up further study or moving into a new relationship or migrating to new shores. As you consider entering a new phase, you will get LOTS of advice. Most of it will be kind and well-meant. But even well-meant advice can hold you back. Listen carefully to what your well-wishers tell you. Soak it in. But then, also listen to your heart. If it's something you really want to do, go ahead and do it. You get one life. You owe it to yourself. And like Will Smith said, you'e got to protect your dreams. Because if you don't, who will?
