In order to feel accepted, far too many people are living beyond their means. In an increasingly materialistic world, certain people in modern society are frowning upon and criticising the gifts they receive from well-meaning friends. If the brand is not ‘cool’ enough, they mock the gift and the giver of the gift. And heaven forbid, if the product is ‘not branded’, it really is the end of the world for them. Such superficia…l behaviour on the part of some is driving many others into a perpetual state of misery and financial chaos. But it needn’t be this way. First of all, if someone is judging you or ostracising you because of what you give them instead of respecting the emotion behind the gift, you need to ask yourself if the opinons of such people really matter. Secondly, it’s not always possible to buy the ‘ideal’ gift because of different reasons, affordability being a big defining factor. Buy what fits within YOUR budget, not what appeals to the receiver’s budget. Once you’ve handed over the gift, what they do with the gift is NOT your burden to carry. They can mock it, criticise it, recycle it or toss it away. If we keep worrying about how our little acts of kindness are perceived, we’ll never get out of the dangerous spiral of overthinking. And to all those who build their friendships based on how big someone’s home or bank account is or which flashy car someone drives, all I’ll say is true wealth, in the long run, is measured in the currency of goodwill and love. If at the end of our journey here on earth, we can look back and honestly say that certain lives were emotionally enriched because of us, that then is truly a legacy worth leaving behind.
